As a Palestinian youth delegate and a member of ARIJ’s team working on climate change resilience and sustainable natural resource management, I had the privilege to participate in COP29 in Azerbaijan. This distinguished opportunity allowed me to engage in critical discussions on climate adaptation, loss and damage, and climate financing—topics that deeply resonate with the realities faced by my country.
Coming from Palestine, a region affected by conflict, displacement, and resource scarcity, I witnessed how climate change magnifies these challenges, especially for marginalized populations. Limited access to water and land, already strained due to occupation and political tensions, further exacerbated by climate change impacts, highlighting the urgency for inclusive and actionable solutions.
Attending COP29 expanded my understanding of the global climate agenda and emphasized the critical need for adaptation strategies and financial support for communities most at risk. Through meaningful interactions with experts, activists, and fellow youth delegates, I gained valuable insights into how international agreements and funding mechanisms can be leveraged to support vulnerable populations in coping with climate impacts.
One of the most impactful aspects of the experience was the powerful networking opportunities. I connected with youth leaders from other conflict-affected regions, exchanging strategies and ideas for advancing climate resilience in our respective communities. I was also honored to meet Colombia’s Minister of Environment, who expressed strong support for Palestine and acknowledged the unique challenges we face. These conversations were not only empowering but also reinforced the importance of global solidarity in addressing climate challenges.
This experience broadened my perspective, strengthened my advocacy skills, and equipped me with the tools to push for inclusive and effective climate action. I aim to contribute to a just and sustainable future that acknowledges and addresses the distinct challenges faced by Palestinians, ensuring that our voices are included in shaping global solutions to climate change.
