Introduction
Plastic pollution is one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges, threatening climate stability, biodiversity, human health, and sustainable development. Global plastic production now exceeds 450 million tons annually, generating approximately 353 million tons of plastic waste each year, yet only 9% is recycled. The remainder is landfilled, incinerated, or leaked into the environment, highlighting the urgent need for stronger policies, circular economy solutions, and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics (OECD, 2022; UNEP, 2024).

Plastic Crisis in Palestine
Palestine generates about 1.7 million tons of solid waste annually, with plastics making up 16 percent of the total (PCBS, 2023). Recycling rates remain extremely low, between 1 and 3 percent, meaning most plastic ends up in landfills, informal dumps, or is openly burned, releasing greenhouse gases and toxins that contaminate soils, water, and agricultural systems.
Plastic pollution is climate injustice — reducing single‑use plastics is an act of sovereignty and resilience.
The Impacts
Plastic is a hidden climate driver. Its fossil‑fuel‑based production and disposal generate CO₂, methane, and black carbon (UNEP, 2024). In Palestine, open burning and dumping intensify air pollution, degrade soils, and threaten food security. Micro-plastics infiltrate water systems, weakening ecosystems and reducing their ability to store carbon.
Every plastic item has a climate cost — ending single‑use plastics protects food security and biodiversity.
ARIJ’s Initiatives Toward Zero Waste
The Applied Research Institute – Jerusalem (ARIJ) has pioneered practical interventions that demonstrate how circular economy principles can reduce plastic pollution and enhance resilience. ARIJ has supported youth entrepreneurs in recycling agricultural plastic waste using 3D printing technology and plastic molding to produce fittings for irrigation networks and other useful agricultural products. Two youth‑led enterprises have already expanded their capacity to recycle larger volumes of plastic waste, turning pollution into productive resources (ARIJ, 2026).
ARIJ has also invested in organic waste composting units that use biodegradable filling bags, replacing non‑degradable plastic sacs and reducing landfill pressure. In addition, ARIJ has supported a herbs production factory to adopt biodegradable tea bags and containers, ensuring that packaging materials return safely to nature rather than persisting as pollutants. These initiatives illustrate how smart circular economy practices can be piloted in agriculture and food production, offering replicable models for private sector actors, NGOs, donors, and communities.
Smart circular practices prove that zero plastic waste is achievable and replicable.
A Circular Future for Palestine
Palestine must shift from a linear “take‑make‑dispose” model to a circular economy. A National Plastic Reduction Strategy is needed, integrating bans on single‑use plastics, incentives for biodegradable alternatives, extended producer responsibility, and investment in recycling industries. This transition aligns with SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14, and SDG 15, while fostering innovation and resilience.
A circular economy is the pathway to climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and global solidarity.
Advocacy Messages to Key Actors
To the Palestinian people: reducing single‑use plastics is a collective act of climate responsibility that protects health, food, and community resilience. To the private sector: investing in recycling and eco‑packaging is both environmental responsibility and market opportunity, creating jobs and opening access to green markets. To the Palestinian government: leadership is essential — enforce bans, incentivize innovation, and integrate circular economy principles into national climate policy.
People, business, and government together can transform Palestine’s plastic crisis into resilience and innovation.
Economic Impact
Recycling and reuse of plastic waste generate tangible economic benefits. By turning agricultural plastics into irrigation fittings and biodegradable packaging, Palestine reduces import dependence, lowers production costs, and creates new livelihood opportunities. Youth‑led recycling enterprises expand green jobs, while composting and eco‑packaging industries strengthen local markets.
Recycling plastic waste is both climate action and economic opportunity — building resilience while creating jobs and reducing costs.
Finally, Plastic Free Day 2026 is a call to action for Palestine to lead by example. Through ARIJ’s initiatives, pollution is being transformed into productivity and waste into resilience. Breaking free from single‑use plastics is essential for a sustainable, sovereign, and climate‑resilient future.
