The Applied Research Institute – Jerusalem (ARIJ), with funding from the Holy Land Christians Society (HLCS), is implementing a hydroponic farming project to support 62 marginalized and vulnerable families in the West Bank. This initiative aims to empower these families by providing them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools to grow their own organic fruits and vegetables using locally developed hydroponic farming systems. By enabling self-sufficiency, the project reduces the financial burdens associated with daily food consumption.
Over a six-month period, ARIJ will implement several key activities. These include the selection of 62 beneficiary families, observational and practical training on hydroponic farming, procurement and installation of hydroponic units, and follow-up visits to ensure successful implementation. Each hydroponic unit requires only 4 square meters for installation and allows families to grow up to four different crops to meet their dietary needs.
In response to the growing economic challenges in the West Bank, where food prices continue to rise and unemployment remains high, this project offers a sustainable solution to food insecurity. By utilizing locally made hydroponic systems, families can maintain and expand their farming activities beyond the project’s timeframe. The initiative not only enhances food security but also fosters intergenerational learning, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience for some of the vulnerable communities in the region.
